The Best Things Are Not Things
In a captivating session at Reed Gift Fairs' Retail Therapy Conference, Lauren Li, the visionary Founder and Creative Director of Sisällä, shared profound insights on the true essence of home decor. Her presentation, "The Best Things Are Not Things - It's How We Feel in Our Home That Matters," emphasised that the value of our living spaces transcends mere physical objects.
The Essence of Home Feelings
Lauren began by exploring the emotions we seek to cultivate in our homes: from feeling invigorated and joyful to experiencing calm and comfort. She highlighted that while objects can carry meaning and evoke emotions, it is ultimately how these feelings manifest in our living spaces that defines their true worth.
Aligning Objects with Emotions
Lauren posed an intriguing question: How can we align the things we offer with the emotions our customers desire? She dissected this idea by categorising the primary feelings people seek into four main desires: Status, Connection, Peace of Mind, and Belonging.
1. Status: For those seeking a 'wow factor,' the home becomes a stage to impress. This desire is fulfilled through curated, elite designs that prioritise aesthetics over function. Think of handmade, one-of-a-kind pieces that reflect refined taste and scarcity.
2. Connection: Sentimental value takes centre stage here. Items collected over time, each with a personal story, create a familiar and unique environment. These pieces might not always match but together, they weave a narrative unique to the homeowner.
3. Peace of Mind: Tranquility, order, and convenience define this category. Thoughtful, practical designs that bring calm and tidiness into the home are key. It's about creating a serene haven where every item has a purpose and place.
4. Belonging: A sense of safety, familiarity, and being admired drives this desire. Popular, in-demand items that resonate with the broader community provide a sense of belonging and acceptance.
Transforming Feelings into Tangible Designs
Lauren concluded by emphasising that while the best things may not be tangible objects, the right objects can significantly enhance how we feel in our homes. As retailers and designers, understanding and matching these emotional desires with our offerings can make our 'things' stand out and resonate deeply with our customers.
Her insights remind us that in the world of home decor, it’s not just about the items we sell but the feelings they evoke and the stories they tell. By focusing on these emotional connections, we can create more meaningful and fulfilling home experiences for our customers.
