Discovering Hidden Retail Opportunities: ALNA's Newsagent Industry Initiative at Reed Gift Fairs

At the recent Reed Gift Fairs in Melbourne, the Australian Lottery and Newsagents Association (ALNA) hosted their inaugural Supplier Forum, revealing insights about one of Australia's most overlooked retail opportunities.

The Scale Might Surprise You

Here's a statistic that stopped suppliers in their tracks: newsagents and lottery retailers serve 35% of Australia's population every week. That's nearly 10 million customer interactions across 2,400 newsagents and 4,300 lottery retailers nationwide. These aren't occasional shoppers – 53% visit at least weekly, with high loyalty rates and strong purchasing habits.

The industry is stabilising after years of transformation, with many operators now thriving by adapting their product ranges toward gifting, homewares, and local products. Recent lottery commission increases worth $100 million annually have also provided retailers with additional capital to invest in expanded stock ranges.

Understanding the Modern Newsagent Customer

Research presented by Retail Doctor Group CEO Brian Walker revealed that despite cost-of-living pressures, consumer confidence is returning. Critically, 86% of customers remain loyal to their preferred retailers, while 97% participate in loyalty programs.

The data shows particularly strong performance for cards and gifts in regional areas, with customers seeking enhanced experiences from knowledgeable, friendly staff. However, many retailers miss add-on sale opportunities—a gap worth billions to the retail economy if addressed.

The Industry Think Tank Solution

For over five years, ALNA's Industry Think Tank has worked to remove operational roadblocks preventing retailers from focusing on customer service and sales. Their survey of 360 stores revealed that the average newsagent owner spends 36 hours weekly on administrative processes, managing nearly 40 different suppliers with varied ordering systems.

The Think Tank has identified three key projects:

·       Digitisation: A new Community Hub platform allowing suppliers to provide digital content that retailers can easily access and share across their platforms.

·       Supply Chain Efficiency: Solutions for electronic invoicing, streamlined ordering processes, and stock management that could free up hours weekly for customer-facing activities.

·       Retail Reboot: Support for retailers looking to revitalise their product ranges and business approaches.

What This Means for Suppliers

The forum highlighted specific ways suppliers can tap into this market more effectively:

·        Providing electronic invoicing capabilities

·        Offering online ordering with real-time stock availability

·        Supplying proper barcodes and recommended retail prices for AI-powered POS systems

·        Considering lower minimum quantities for trial products

·        Supporting retailers with quality product imagery and marketing materials

Moving Forward

The suppliers who supported the event—including NewsCorp, Nine, GNS, XchangeIT, The Lottery Corporation, Hallmark, and others—recognised the collaborative potential. Many Reed Gift Fairs suppliers expressed surprise at both the scale of opportunity and the practical solutions available.

ALNA plans to make this an annual event, building on the success of bringing suppliers and retailers together for mutual benefit. With 10 million weekly customer interactions, the potential for growth remains enormous for those ready to engage with this retail channel.
